I went to the dentist today, and he told me that I need to stop chewing gum because it is bad for my teeth. SCREECHING HALT! Isn’t chewing gum supposed to be good for your teeth, keep them clean and massage your gums? Not according to my dentist. He said that the type of gum I chew (sugar free) contains something called Maltitol, which creates a layer around your teeth and may cause them to decay.
I really don’t know who to trust anymore! The doctor or the TV commercials? lol! Easy answer 🙂

I’ve never heard of it being bad for your teeth. Most of what I found when I did some research was that it keeps your mouth lower, so unlike sugar, the acids that eat away at your enamel don’t form.
Really, the only downside to malitol that I am aware of is that since it’s a sugar alcohol, it can cause lower GI distress if you ingest to much of it.
